The tricky topic of ‘Disciplinary and Dismissal’ is the subject of the latest in a series of free HR masterclasses taking place next month – something which is crucial that employers get right if they are to avoid possible tribunal claims.

The two sessions, which are taking place in Norwich and Great Yarmouth, are the twelfth in a series of masterclasses presented by the HR team at Lovewell Blake.

“Managing disciplinary processes fairly, objectively and robustly is key to managing employees’ behaviour in the workplace, or in the case of dismissal, avoiding a tribunal claim,” said Vicky Webber, Lovewell Blake’s assistant HR manager, who will present the masterclasses along with colleagues Gemma Chapman and Claire Moore.

“Particularly for smaller employers without their own HR department, the whole subject of disciplinary and dismissal can be a minefield.  Since tribunal fees were abolished, we are seeing many more cases, and employers have to be able to demonstrate that they have followed the correct processes to the letter if they are to avoid judgements against them.

“An effective disciplinary process can help employers solve problems before they come to dismissal in many cases, but where it does result in dismissal, a well-followed and thought-out process is key to ensure the dismissal is fair.”

The masterclasses will take participants through the key steps to follow, and highlight potential pitfalls, introducing a step-by-step guide to disciplinary processes.  Topics will include the difference between misconduct and gross misconduct; documents required throughout the process; who should carry out the process, how to conduct disciplinary hearings and appeal hearings, and alternative action to dismissal.

The ‘Disciplinary and Dismissal’ masterclasses take place on Wednesday 11th March at Lovewell Blake’s Norwich office, and on Tuesday 17th March at their Great Yarmouth office.  The masterclasses start at 7.45am, with a buffet breakfast provided.

Attendance is free, but places must be reserved.  For more details, or to book a place, visit. www.lovewell-blake.co.uk/events.
