HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW - ANNA MAKES THE KINDEST CUT OF ALL TO HELP CHILDREN RECEIVING CANCER TREATMENT

A Lowestoft accounts assistant has parted with her waist-length hair so that she can donate it to a charity which creates wigs for children going through chemotherapy and with alopecia – and she is set to raise money for a local hospital at the same time.

Anna McKay, who works at the Lowestoft office of accountants Lovewell Blake, has spent two and a half years growing her locks, which were lopped off on Saturday.

Anna is donating the two foot long tresses to the Little Princess Trust, which uses donated hair to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer or other treatment.  The Trust was in the media spotlight when pop singer Jessie J donated all her hair to be made into children’s wigs.

Colleagues at Lovewell Blake are also sponsoring her efforts, with proceeds going to the renal unit in the James Paget hospital, where Anna’s mum is a dialysis patient.

“I first started growing my hair long almost by accident,” said Anna.  “Life got in the way, and for one reason or another, I didn’t get it cut.  Then I read about the Little Princess Trust in a magazine, and decided to keep on growing my hair until it was long enough to donate.”

One thing Anna is looking forward to is saving time in the morning – her long hair takes half an hour each day to wash and condition, and that is without blow-drying.
