Four North Walsham High School students were flying high today (Tuesday 7th July), after they took to the skies above north Norfolk in a high-flying reward for their efforts in the classroom.

Following a kind – and unsolicited – offer from the team at Northrepps Aerodrome to give four lucky students a flight in microlite aircraft, the school drew lots amongst all of its ‘Expert Learners’ to pick the four lucky students who would enjoy the high-altitude experience.

11-year-old Oliver Freeman, joined Ellise Finch, 13, Hannah Lev, 14, and Jemma Parsons, 15, in the passenger seats of two microlite aircraft, for a flight which took them along the north Norfolk coast and over Cromer, before swooping back over the Northrepps Aerodrome.

The two aircraft were piloted by Kevin Smith and Adam Gillespie – himself a former NWHS student, who has pursued a career in aviation after leaving the school eight years ago.

“This was a real treat for our students, and they thoroughly enjoyed it,” said assistant head Paul Clark, who accompanied the group to the Aerodrome (but kept his feet on terra firma).

“It was extremely kind of Kevin and his team to make the offer to reward four students who had made a particular effort his year, and it was very appropriate that they were picked from our group of ‘Expert Learners’, all of whom have gone the extra mile in terms of attendance, punctuality and attitude to learning.

“These kind of experiences are really inspiring.  Every airline pilot in the country started out their flying career somewhere like Northrepps Aerodrome, so perhaps one of these four will be motivated to pursue a career in aviation.  But whatever they do, they have proved that with a good attitude to learning, the sky really is the limit.”
