Lowestoft-based developer Wellington has been announced as a three-times finalist in the 2016 LABC East Anglia Building Excellence Awards.

The firm has two places on the shortlist of four finalists in the ‘Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion’ category for its work with Saffron Housing to convert Trafalgar House and the Old Fire Station in Great Yarmouth into 29 affordable homes; and for its conversion of the South-East Tower, part of Great Yarmouth’s medieval town wall, into holiday accommodation, for the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust.

Wellington is also a finalist in the ‘Best Partnership with a Local Authority’ category, for its work in partnership with Waveney District Council’s Building Control department.

The overall category winners will be announced at a ceremony at Kings College, Cambridge on 24th June.

Wellington managing director Paul Pitcher said, “We are delighted to be a finalist not once but three times in these prestigious awards, and that achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of our team here at Wellington.

“It is particularly pleasing that two of the four shortlisted entries in the ‘change of use’ category are ours.  We have invested in the specialist skills needed to tackle projects involving historic and heritage buildings – these are skills which are in danger of being lost, and it is important that we retain them locally.

“We are also delighted that the partnership we have built with the Building Control department of our ‘home’ local authority of Waveney has been recognised.  In addition, Waveney has made a commitment to build 100 new affordable homes across the district, and we have worked with them to turn this aspiration into reality – we are on site right now with the first of these new homes.”

The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards celebrate all that is good in the construction industry.  The awards look at the creation and restoration of excellent buildings: outstanding craftsmanship, technical innovation, sustainability and high performance.
