People living with sight loss in west Norfolk are being invited to two special presentations in King’s Lynn and Downham Market by Norfolk’s sight loss charity, which is working with a company which specialises in assistive technology to help vision impaired people live independently.

The presentations, at Vision Norfolk’s King’s Lynn hub in Thoresby College in Queen Street and at Downham Market Methodist Church on Paradise Road, both take place on Tuesday 17th February, with the King’s Lynn session running from 10am-12pm, and the Downham Market session from 1.30pm-3.30pm.

The sessions will be run by Humanware, a global leader in assistive technology, which designs and manufacturers a wide range of technology for people living with sight loss, including magnifiers, audio assistants, Braille devices, GPS-enabled digital orientation and mobility assistants, and reading machines.

Representatives from the company, whose UK operation is based in Northamptonshire, will be on hand to explain and demonstrate the technology, with visitors having the opportunity to try it for themselves.

The sessions are part of Vision Norfolk’s county-wide Digital Technology for People with Vision Impairment in Norfolk project, a £100,000 initiative funded by the Department of Science Innovation and Technology’s Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund, which aims to help people with sight loss to gain confidence, independence, and connection through digital technology.

“This kind of technology can be a real game-changer when it comes to helping people living with sight loss to lead independent lives,” said Penny Whitby, manager at Vision Norfolk’s King’s Lynn hub, who is herself blind.

“Our initiative is aimed at helping people who might not be so confident with technology to make the most of this, helping them to live more independent lives.”

The Humanware assistive technology demonstration takes place on Tuesday 17th February as follows:

  • 10am-12pm: Vision Norfolk hub, Thoresby College, Queen Street, King’s Lynn
  • 1.30pm-3.30pm: Downham Market methodist Church, Paradise Road, Downham Market

The sessions are free to attend; no prior booking is necessary.  Tea and coffee will be provided.  For more details call the Vision Norfolk Kings’ Lynn hub on 01553 660808.
