CHEERS! GREAT YARMOUTH PUB REGULARS RISE TO SIGHT LOSS CHARITY’S FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE
Regulars at a nationally-renowned real ale pub in Great Yarmouth which hosts a monthly pub games event for vision impaired people have raised over £300 for Norfolk’s sight loss charity.
Drinkers at The Blackfriars Tavern, which was one of CAMRA’s four national finalists for Pub of the Year in 2025, donated money raised at monthly quizzes and at a special Christmas card evening to Vision Norfolk, which helps vision impaired people in the county live independent lives.
The pub hosts monthly pub games events for groups from the charity, which is marking its 220th year with its 220 Challenge, which aims to raise £220,000 during the year to help support vision impaired people throughout the county.
Publicans Phavez Smith and Rachael Seaward decided to take part, with the aim of raising £220, but in the event were able to hand over £303 during Vision Norfolk’s most recent visit to the pub.
“The partnership between the Blackfriars Tavern and our Great Yarmouth hub goes back some months, with the pub welcoming a group of vision impaired people once a month to enjoy a drink and take part in traditional; pub games as part of our ongoing activities programme,” said Vision Norfolk fundraising manager Joe Russell.
“It is really kind of Phavez and Rachael and their regulars to go one step further and support our 220 Challenge, and we are very grateful for the money they have raised.”
In October the pub was named CAMRA’s best cider and perry pub, and was in the top four in the running for the overall CAMRA Pub of the Year award.
