CATARACT PATIENTS’ CUPPAS HELP RAISE MONEY FOR SIGHT LOSS CHARITY

Patients at a Norwich eye clinic have raised £400 to Norfolk’s charity supporting people with sight loss – by drinking tea and coffee.

The clinic, run by Norfolk Surgical and Diagnostic Centres (NDSC) and based at the St Stephens Gate Medical Practice in the city, provides free tea and coffee for patients before and after their cataract surgery.  In return, patients are invited to donate to a nominated local charity – and for the past few months that charity has been the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind (NNAB).

NNAB chief executive Mike Talbot visited the clinic to meet staff and receive the cheque from NDSC chief executive Susan Latham.

“We are very grateful for the support shown to NNAB by patients and staff here at the clinic,” said Mr Talbot.  “The cataract clinic here is helping so many people improve their sight, so it’s nice that those patients have made donations to an organisation which exists to support those who have suffered sight loss.”

NDSC was set up in the 1990s to offer various surgical procedures in medical centres in Norfolk.  Its first cataract operation was performed in King’s Lynn in 1996, and today the organisation performs up to 1,800 such procedures each year, 1,200 of them in at St Stephens Gate Medical Practice in Norwich.
