13 year old callum goes bald to help macmillan cancer support

A 13-year-old North Walsham student has had a hair-raising experience – in front of more than 200 of his classmates.

Callum Franklin, a Year 9 student at North Walsham High School, had his head shaved in school assembly to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support– an idea he came up with after learning that his nan had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

A nervous Callum took his seat under the spotlight on the stage of the school’s Atrium auditorium, and as more than 200 fellow students cheered him on, his abundant locks were removed by local hairdresser Kirsty Wagge.

Callum hoped the stunt would raise at least £200, but with sponsorship and a bucket collection in the assembly, the total currently stands at more than double that.

“My nan is having chemotherapy, and lost her hair a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to do something to show my support, and came up with the idea of a head shave,” said Callum.  “I wanted my friends to see it, and the school said I could have it done during assembly.”

Also watching the stunt were Callum’s mum and dad, Lisa and Lee Franklin.  Mr Franklin said, “His nan is so proud of him, she’s really over the moon.  Getting your head shaved when you are a teenager is a brave enough thing to do; to do it in front of all your classmates shows real courage.  We are all very proud of him.”

Head teacher Caroline Brooker, who tweeted before and after selfies featuring herself and Callum, said, “Callum is a real credit to his family and to the school.  We shouldn’t underestimate what a big thing this was to do, and the admiration around the school for him has been reflected in the amount of money raised for an excellent cause.

“Anyone who wants to support Callum’s fundraising for MacMillan Cancer Support is welcome to send a cheque care of the school, and we will ensure it is added to the total.”
